Email forwarding option with Rackspace Hosted Email
I use the rackspace addon and have 7 maiboxes, covering 3 domains.
Because the email is with rackspace I have set my Mx records to use their servers, however there is no option for auto responders, catchall or most importantly email forwarding.
Im able to forward from a mailbox to another account, but I cannot just have a simple forward. This is very restrictive because it means for each email address I want to use I have to buy another mailbox, even if no mail ever sits in the box.
But we have a number of different emails which I want to direct to one staff member or another and I dont want to have to pay for each forward to be a mailbox that will not be used.
Autoresponders is also a problem. Buying just a single mailbox with rackspace ties my entire email system to them, so we need more direct flexibility in how to handle emails.
I found this restriction to be totally baffling--it boosts the cost of hosting significantly if we end of purchasing mailboxes for forwarders where no mailbox is actually required. I wish this was clearer in the documentation for the rackspace add-on.
I totally agree... I was not aware of this until I needed to set up a number of email addresses from my domain to go to assorted gmail addresses. This is ludidcrous that you cannot forward mail without having to purchas a "redundant" mailbox

You're better off using mailgun. It's free and you can exactly route email@example.com -> firstname.lastname@example.org as you want.
